Sungei Buloh extension completes native mangrove planting phase

NParks announced completion of the latest mangrove planting phase along the western buffer of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, with monitoring data showing a ninety-one percent sapling survival rate through the northeast monsoon. The work adds fourteen hectares of transitional habitat intended to support migratory shorebirds and juvenile fish nurseries.

Volunteer groups from secondary schools helped with monthly trash audits, but planting was limited to certified nursery stock to avoid invasive species reintroduction. New boardwalk segments open next month include wider passing bays for prams and seated rest points with shade sails.

Interpretive panels explain salinity changes and include QR-free text summaries for visitors on limited data plans. Rangers will run dawn bird-count sessions every first Saturday without registration fees.

Climate researchers note that intact mangrove edges reduce wave energy on adjacent aquaculture zones, a co-benefit highlighted in the park's updated management plan.
